Abstract

Milling.-A machine particularly adapted for milling rail joints on worn rails is arranged so that the traverse of the cutter slide causes the guide on which it is traversed to be tilted, so that the cutter cuts a curve. Fig. 3 shows the machine diagrammatically, and Fig. 4 is a part plan of Fig. 3. The guide a is supported by oppositely threaded-screws f, f<1>, which are turned by means of arms h, h<1>, linked at their ends by a rod i carrying an adjustable stop j embraced by a fork k attached to the cutter slide c. The screws are carried in wheeled supports, one of which is suitably stayed while the machine is working. By removing the stop j a straight cut may be taken. Fig. 6 shows a machine as arranged for use on a railway. A third wheel g<3> is added, with framing r. The bearings of the wheels g' are arranged to swivel, and may be locked by a sleeve q when taking the machine along roads. The motion of the guide may be effected by spur and rack gearing or otherwise, instead of by the linkage described.
