Abstract

16,521. Hughes, L. S. Aug. 5. Metallurgical furnaces.-Pulverized ores are introduced by an air blast into a gas-fired furnace, which is formed of unlined sheet metal so that the heat of the ore particles undergoing oxidation may be maintained at a low temperature while slag is prevented from adhering to the walls. In the form shown in Fig. 1, ore from a hopper H having a regulating-slide I passes through a shoot H<1>, provided with a vibratiogdevice J, and is delivered to the conical bottom A' of the furnace above a compressed-air pipe B. Gas from nozzles F<2> is delivered into upwardly-inclined - tubes G, the ends G<1> of which are formed as shown so as to prevent material from entering the tubes. The walls of the furnace are protected from the action of the flame K by a jacket L of air admitted through openings A<2> which also serve for the discharge of the material. The products of combustion are drawn by a fan D through a flue C, having settling-chambers C', and the solid particles are finally separated from the gases by screens E arranged above hoppers C<4>.
