Abstract

16,222. Shillington, H. July 31. Sewage, treating; filtering; filtering-media.- Sewage passes from a septic tank 2, Fig. 1, through a covered receiving-chamber 4, having an overflow weir 5 at one end, and through penstocks 7 to filters 14. The liquid is distributed over the filters by troughs 8 having notches in the sides and a perforated base. The filters consist of successive layers 9, 10, 11, of sand or fine cinders, polarite, and cinders, coke, coal or slate, separated by galvanized iron-wire netting. These materials rest on tiles 12 covering drainage channels formed by spaced rows of bricks. The filters may be ventilated by means of galvanized iron tubes rising above the surface and descending to various levels. Fig. 8 shows a modified form for lateral filtration. The layers 9, 10, 11 are vertical, and there is a space 17 for the liquid. A thick iron plate 19 with a low wall 18 prevents the liquid over-running the filter. It is stated that in either form of filter there may be spaces, filled with liquid, between adjacent layers of filtering-material and the netting.
