Abstract

15,648. Justice, P. M., [Eclipse Machine Co.]. July 23. [Cognate Application No. 20,790, A.D. 1908, dated Oct. 2.] Brakes.-In back-pedalling brake mechanism for cycles &c., an axially-movable but non-rotatable sleeve 16 is provided with a wedge face 20 to engage a corresponding face 21 upon an expander 18 disposed between the longitudinal edges of the brake sleeve 14, so that the expander is moved transversely for applying the brake, As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an intermediate part 23, with ratchet teeth 24 to engage the driving-sleeve and with a spring retarder 28, is moved axially to force the wedge face 20 into contact with the expander 18, the sliding sleeve 16 and the brake sleeve being held against rotation by a diametrical lug 15 upon a stationary block 8. The brake sleeve may also be anchored to the sleeve 16, as by the lug shown. The block 8 screwed upon the axle is fixed by means of lugs 10, which are provided upon a washer 9 to pass through the fork slot and engage recesses in the block. The washer may also have teeth 13 to bear upon the outer side of the fork. In a modification, the intermediate member for applying the brake is in the form of a flanged sleeve, and, on back-pedalling, it is pressed inwards by a driving-clutch bar or expander forced in an axial direction by the inclined or cam portion of a notch upon the driving-sleeve. The brake-sleeve bar or expander is provided with a second wedge face at its outer end to engage a fixed wedge upon the lug 15, so that, when the brake is applied, the bar rides up wedges at both ends. With this form of brake, the bar may be formed integrally with the sleeve. In another modification, the intermediate brake-applying member is formed as a screw-threaded sleeve which is shouldered to bear upon the sleeve 16.
