Abstract

15,054. Gray, R. K. July 15. Cables are made with the wires composing one or more of the layers surrounding the central core laid up parallel to the axis of the conductor, in order that the cable shall not lose its tensile strength entirely when the strands are cut through by abrasion. The wires may be either conductors or armouring- wires, and, as shown in Fig. 1, the cable consists of a central core A surrounded by a helically-wound conducting layer B, a gutta-percha layer C, a brasstape layer D, an impregnated-tape layer E, a lamp layer F, a layer consisting of straight steel wires G separated by hemp G<1>, a hemp layer H, a helicallywound layer J of covered steel wires, and a guttapercha covering K. Specifications No. 2402, A.D. 1859, No. 1749, A.D. 1866, and No. 5673, A.D. 1882, are referred to.
