Abstract

14,895. Sayer, R. C. July 14. Single-track cycles; driving-mechanism ; steering-mechanism.-In a singletrack cycle or like vehicle the frame is formed of jointed members so arranged that when the seat tends to fall forwards or backwards the wheel base is correspondingly lengthened against the action of springs. The seat is carried by a fork d<2> jointed at d<7> to members d<6>, which are in turn jointed at d<8> to members d<5> themselves jointed at d<4> to members d<3>, springs g being provided between the joints d<8> and the axle. For driving purposes, an arm e<2>, Fig. 5, upon the crank axle engages a wheel o which is arranged to slide transversely to gear with one or other of the wheel p, p<2>, p<3>, wheels q, q<2>, q<3> upon the axle p<4>, p<5>, p<6> being connected by means of a chain q<4> with a freewheel pinion a' upon the wheel hub. For varying the speed, a screw-threaded sleeve m co-operating with a non- rotatable nut n is actuated by a handle, chain-wheels m', m<3>, and a chain m<6> to move the wheel o laterally to bring its teeth into mesh with those of the wheels p, p' or p<3>, as desired. To steer the vehicle, the turning of the handle-bar stem j is communicated by a joint h<7>, rotatable part h<3>, chain-wheels h<4>, h<6>, chain h<5>, enclosed rod d<13>, Fig. 4, hinge joints h<9>, h<10>, and a fork h<11> to the guide h<12> and axle b<3> of the wheel b, the wheel c being simultaneously turned by means of a cross-piece upon the stem j, crossed cords, and a second crosspiece upon an upward extension (not shown in Fig. 1) of a similarly enclosed rod d<13> in the rear frame member d<5>. To enable the small wheel b to pass over obstacles it is provided with a shoe b<2>, which is supported at the front by a strut d<10> and is formed at the rear with a channelled piece b4 connected by bolts d<6> to the forked end of the frame member d<5>. The vehicle may be ridden with the wheel b or c raised.
