Abstract

14,247. Bates, A., Briggs, T., and British United Shoe Machinery Co. July 4. Welts and welting.-In machines for attaching rands to the bottoms of boots and shoes, the relation between the work and the rand guide is automatically varied according to the curvature of the work at predetermined portions of the boot or shoe. This movement is arranged to ensure a surplus of material at such parts, say the toe, which surplus is subsequently removed. The means employed may operate to shift the work or the rand guide, or both. In one form, a rotatable work-support B, Fig. 1, is provided with a cam B', having a curvature which though not similar to the curvature of the edge of the boot is allied thereto. This cam is operatively connected through a lever F pivoted to the machine frame, and an adjusting-screw F<3>, to 'an edge-rest E in contact with the edge of the boot and arranged to slide in a bracket E<2> fixed to the machine frame. The welt guide D is adjustable by hand in a guide fixed to the machine frame. As the boot C is turned by the operator to bring the toe portion of the boot under the rand-attaching means, the cam B<2> operates the sliding edgerest E to push the boot towards the operator, so causing the rand C<1> to project to a greater extent at the toe (see Fig. 4). In a modification, the cam B<2> may be operatively connected by a system of levers to the rand guide D to effect the relative movement. Or two fixed edge-guides may be provided against which the work is pressed, a movable member being arranged between them so as to be actuated by the portion of the boot having the increased curvature as it comes between the edge-guides. The movable member is operatively connected to the rand guide to effect the required relative movement between the rand and the work. Or, one or both of the edge-guides may be pivoted to the frame of the machine so as to be operated by the varying contour of the work to effect the required movement of the rand guide.
