Regulating ; switches.-A current regulator, for automatically compensating for variations of voltage or of resistance due to changes of temperature in telautograph installations &c., consists of a voltmeter the arm of which carries a contact arranged to swing clear of, and to be brought into contact with, a rheostat, by means of an electro-magnet energized from the circuit to be regulated, or from a derived circuit. Variations of resistance due to temperature changes are compensated for by placing in the volt-meter circuit a resistance of such a valve and temperature coefficient that its resistance will vary proportionately with that of the circuit to be controlled. The moving coil of the volt-meter a is provided with a pointer b carrying a spring contact c adapted to swing clear of the rheostat e. After the circuit has been closed by the switch h, the armature j of the electro-magnet i, adjusted to be moved under approximately full current, presses the contact c against the rheostat e, thereby shortcircuiting a portion of the latter. To compensate for variations of resistance due to temperature changes, a resistance k is placed in series with the volt-meter, of such a value and temperature coefficient that its resistance will vary proportionally with that of the coil g. When the circuit to be regulated is non-inductive, the volt-meter a is permanently connected to the source, so that the armature j is not operated before the contact c is in its correct position. This operation may also be obtained by short circuiting the coil i<1> of the electro-magnet until current is established in the circuit to be regulated ; or the magnet may be placed in an independent circuit closed by a relay energized from the main circuit. To compensate for variations of voltage or resistance while the circuit to be regulated is closed, the coil i<1> of the electro-magnet is periodically short-circuited, or its circuit broken, thereby freeing the arm of the volt-meter.
