Abstract
13,231. Newsome, E. L., and Newsome, M. June 22. Astronomical games.-The movements of the planets around the sun is imitated in a game played upon a board, table, or other playing-surface marked out with circles and radial lines as shown in Fig. 1. The centre circle J represents the sun and each of the other circles represents the orbit of a planet. The radial lines K represent weeks, and the lines X lunar months, of the earth's revolution round the sun. Holes L are made at the points of intersection of the lines and circles for the reception of the playing-pieces. A line P, which passes through the points where some of the lines and circles intersect, represents the path of a comet. The playing-pieces consist of a peg M, Fig. 2, bearing a symbol to indicate the planet it represents, the earth being represented by a hemisphere having a pivoted arm bearing a small sphere representing the moon. A part O of the board is formed as a smooth ball-race having a series of numbered holes at the end towards the centre of the board. The players strike balls with a cue and if a ball rolls into a hole the player moves his planet forward by the number of the hole. Instead of balls and cues, counters and flippers, a roulette, or dice may be used to determine the move. Each piece starts from the line Z, and the player whose piece first reaches the goal wins the game. The goals of the various pieces are the lines 3, 4, 5, 6, V and W. The game may be played outdoors on a ground laid out to form the playing-surface, and the players compete with balls and sticks, or bowl round the circles, the balls being intercepted by holes and hazards.
