Abstract

13,189. Knudsen, J. June 20. Excavating, methods of.-In a method of tunnelling under roads &c., a trench is first made in the ground to the depth of the under surface of the roof of the tunnel, the roof is made on the bottom of the trench, the surface of the road is re-made on the roof, and the tunnel is excavated under the roof. Before or after the trench is made, two rows of girders e are driven into the ground, the tops projecting slightly into the space to be occupied by the roof. Between the girders e two or more rows of piles x are driven with their heads a little below the levelled earth, to accommodate beams z which are placed longitudinally on them. Concrete a for the roof is then placed on the levelled earth and is covered with a layer of tarred felt or the like c and finally by a thin layer of cement-concrete d. The road surface is then re-made. After the concrete has set, a drift with sloping sides is made to about half the depth of the tunnel so that the piles x and beams z become exposed. The upper ends of each transverse pair of piles x are then connected by cross-beams y, and the entire cross-section of the tunnel is gradually removed. When the girders e are exposed, planks m are inserted longitudinally between them, forming walls. The walls and bottom of the tunnel are covered with a thin layer of concrete n on which tarred felt is placed, and the side walls o are then made. When these have set, the piles x and beams y, z are removed and the floor is made. In a modified method, after the roof has been made, preferablv on a layer of planks, a drift is excavated to the bottom of the tunnel and planks f and struts g are put in place. Scaffolds p, which may be provided with screw spindles k, are next inserted on sleepers h and support girders i and beams j. The props g and planks f are then removed and the excavation proceeded with, planks m being placed between the girders e. The scaffolds p are finally removed, and the tunnel is completed.
