Abstract

13,147. McCormick, S. June 20. Loom dobbies.-To produce a "repp" or cross border when desired in looms having a Shorrock or Blackburn dobby, the weaver pulls a cord 9, Fig. 2, and thus rotates two shafts 2, Figs. 1 and 2, one for each set of needles 3, the shafts being fixed in the end frames 10 of the dobby or in short frames 11 attached thereto. The shafts are rotated against the action of springs 5 until one of the stop-rods 6 provided on these shafts comes in contact with a fixed bar or grate 7. Tappets 4, which operate the needles 3 and, in conjunction with the pattern lattices on the barrels 1, produce a plain or other body weave with a plain or other border, are thus thrown out of action, and other tappets 4<A> are placed in action, which, in conjunction with the pattern lattices, produce a cross-border. The cord is attached to some fixed point until the cross-border is completed. Any number of tappets 4, 4<A> may be employed, their positions on the shafts 2 being adjusted by set-screws, by means of which they may also be loosened and allowed to fall into inoperative position when a piece without crossborders is being woven. A mark on the cloth or warp beam or an ordinary measuring - motion indicates to the weaver when the tappets 4<A> are to be brought into action.
