Abstract

12,786. Browne, C. M., and James, W. J. June 15. Gaiters; mittens; gloves materials, special.- Boots, shoes, gaiters, mittens, and fingerless gloves are made from the skins of small animals, such as rabbits or opossums, or from the skins of the limbs of cattle, sheep, &c., by peeling off the skin so that the portion removed is practically tubular, stretching and securing it over a last or former, immersing it in a bath of alum, permanganate of potash, or like shrinking and tanning solution, drying it, cutting the skin so that the former can be removed, and finally trimming, braiding, or otherwise finishing the article as desired. Any suitable dye may be added to the tanning solution. In the case of a boot, the skin 2, preferably with its flesh side outwards, is stretched over a last 1, and tied securely at 4 and 5. After tanning and drying, a piece of the skin is cut away from the ligature 4 to the tongue 6, Fig. 2, the ligature 5 is trimmed off, and the last is removed. The trimmed portion may be covered with a small patch, which may bear a trade mark &c.
