Pressure filters; filters of similar filtering-units. -In apparatus for filtering beer &c., of the type described in Specification No. 7625, A.D. 1899, a casing 6, Fig. 1, has a drum having the plates 2 and filtering-layers 3 with holes 7 leading to alternate plates 2, the hole 8 also leading from those plates not in communication with holes 7. The filtering-medium formed in layers 3 is supported on the plates 2, the ribs 10 of which fit into the recesses 20 formed on the layers 3. The filtering- plates, Fig. 4, have a flat ring portion 11 on the upper side and a projection 15, surrounding which are the grooves 16, broken by channels 17, which connect with holes 18 issuing at the edge 9. On the lower side of the plate are similar grooves and channels connecting with holes 14 in communication with holes 18 and the edge 9. The bottom plate may have the lower side flat and provided with holes 19. The casing is closed by a lid 28 having an inlet 30 for beer &c., and lugs 32 which press on plates. When pressure is applied by the handle 27, the portion 21 of the layer 3 will be compressed to a greater extent than the rest of the layer and so form a liquid-tight joint. In one modification, the holes 8 are similarly formed to the holes 7, while in another form, shown in Fig. 8, beer &c. is supplied by the pipe 30 and, after filtration, is removed by the pipes 8<a>, 8<b>.
