Gas and explosive-vapour engines.-In engines using compression pumps and working with gas or heavy oils, the capacity of the combustion chamber, which is formed between the pump and the working cylinder, is maintained contant during combustion. This is effected in the two-stroke-cycle road-vehicle and marine engine shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by the provision of links 11, 12, 14 between the pump piston 10 and its corresponding crank, which increase the motion of the piston towards the end of the charging-stroke. The driving-links also retard the motion of the pump piston while the working piston 8 is finishing its in-stroke. The pump is charged through a valve 17, and discharges through a cam -actuated or automatic valve 20 when the working piston reaches the end of its exhaust stroke. In this position, shown in Fig. 2, the charge is ignited, either by the heat of compression, in which case a small quantity of combustion products is retained in the cylinder, or otherwise, while the two pistons move.in opposite directions but maintain constant, until the closing of the discharge valve 20, the combustion space formed between them. To ensure the expulsion of the combustion products, an exhaust valve 18 is provided in the cylinder head and the clearance space is reduced to a minimum. In the preferred construction of engine the capacity of the working cylinder and the stroke of the power piston are greater than those of the pump. If desired, the retarding-links may form the driving- gear of the working cylinder.
