Nitrogen oxides; nitric acid.-Nitrogen peroxide is extracted from air mixtures containing a small quantity of nitric oxide, for example a mixture obtained by striking an electric are in air, by cooling the gas to a very low temperature, and centrifugally separating the mist of nitrogen peroxide. In a modification, a small quantity of steam is added to convert part of the nitrogen peroxide into nitric acid. The separation is effected in a rotary drum, and the gas may be cooled before entering, or while in the drum.
