Abstract

6250. Hicks, J. A. March 20. Carburetting.-In a plant for making carburetted air comprising a carburettor of the type in which the air to be carburetted is not allowed to come in contact with the liquid, air is forced by a blower a through a drying-chamber c, from which part of the air passes through the carburettor d and part through pipes i, j, the two streams mixing at hand passing thence through a pipe l and non-return valve n to the gas-holder m. The carburettor consists of two superposed compartments, the lower of which is provided with a system of perforated tubes 8 through which the petrol is supplied, while the upper is divided by staggered partitions 2. Between the partitions 2 are placed screens carrying chains 4 through which wicks 4a are hung, the lower ends of the wicks passing through holes 5 into the petrol compartment. The air passes through the carburettor from e to f out ot contact with the liquid. The petrol is supplied from a reservoir 16 through a sight-feed 13 to a vessel 9 in communication with the carburettor d, and is maintained at constant level by an air-pipe 12. The carburetted air may pass through a thermoregulator g, in which the amount of gas passing is regulated by the position of a thermal liquid, to the pipe h, in which it is mixed with air from the pipe j, such supply being automatically controlled by a governor k. This governor comprises a tube 29, Fig. 9, containing mercury and enclosing a tube 33 formed with one or more slots 38 and hung from a frame 35. The air entering by the pipe j can only escape to the pipes 39, h through the slots 38, the effective area of which is regulated by the depth of immersion of the tube 33 in the mercury 29<a>. The end of the pipe i is provided with a valve w arranged to be opened automatically to allow air, which is not required, to escape. The subsidiary air-supply governor k, the air-escape valve w, and the gas-supply valve t for the burner of the blower motor b are all controlled by the motion of the gas-holder m through a depending rod p.
