Cutting-machines fo paper and pasteboard.-The straight knives used in paper and pasteboard cutting-machines are operated upon by an horizontal grindstone carried in a frame which is slid by hand along horizontal guide-bars parallel to the plane of the edge required. The koife h, Fig. 1, is clamped on the plate k by jaws i. The plate k is carried by pivots, situated in a line immediately under the knife edge and adjustable in vertical slides, and is supported by a screw v and a lever k<4> so that the angle at which the knife edge is presented to the grindstone may be varied. The grindstone f is adjusted vertically by screws b, is driven by an electromotor e, and is supported by a frame d, which slides along horizontal guide-bars c, the frame being movable within limits in any direction in a horizontal plane. The grindstone may be driven in any suitable way, for example by a flexible shaft and horizontal driving-pulley, or by an elastic belt and vertical driving-pulley, or by a jockey pulley on a counterbalanced lever. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement by which the grindstone f is driven by treadle mechanism. When the knife is to be merely re-sharpened, a block grinder mounted in a frame provided with handles may be rested on the guide-bars and rubbed over the knife edge.
