Abstract

5470. Inglis & Co., G., and Inglis, G. March 11. Cars, continuous, forming trains; bodies; wheelguards; couplings, non-automatic.-A line of openended trucks jointed together is fitted with an endless chain conveyer and used for carrying and discharging coal. To facilitate loading, one side 3, Fig. 7, of each truck is shorter than the opposite side 2. Overlapping plates 4, Fig. 3, riveted on the sides have slots 5 which engage with bolts on the sides of the next truck, and bolts passing through eyes in brackets 6 are also used to connect the trucks. One end of the bottom plate of each truck is made to overlap that of the next truck. To the bottom of each truck are secured plates 13 on which rest the scrapers of the conveyer, and angle-irons 14, Fig. 7, are provided below to support the scrapers on their return. The running-wheels 8 which may. be for road or for rail traction, are each fitted to short axles 9, which are formed integrally with plates 10 riveted to the trucks. Guard-plates 11 with curved ends 12 prevent contact of the wheels with pit-props &c. The front and rear trucks have each a side pulley 17 secured on an axle 18 passing through the sides, the floor being sloped as shown at 19 to clear this axle. An angled guide-plate 20 keeps the conveyer chains in position against the floor. Two endless conveyer chains are carried by pairs of sprocketwheels 27 driven from the front pulley 17 through toothed gearing, as shown in Fig. 4, which is a plan of the front truck, the chains being omitted. On the shaft 18 is fixed a ratchet-wheel 28, with which engages a pawl 29 sliding in a square eye in a bracket 30 fixed to the outside of the truck. A square loop 33 is jointed to the pawl 29 and serves to draw it out of contact with the ratchet 28, either by band or automatically by encountering a fixed hook. To prevent complete withdrawal, a bolt passes through a hole 31 in the bracket 30 and through a slot 32 in the pawl 29. The conveyer chains carry a series of scrapers 35, Fig. 7, secured by means of brackets 36 and consisting of flat bars with down-turned ends, each bar having a doublyangled piece 37 riveted at its centre. The loaded vehicle is propelled by means of power applied to an endless rope 40, and is stopped at the desired place ; the pawl 29 is disengaged from the ratchetwheel 28 and the coal is discharged by the conveyer. The shaft 18 of the rear truck is also fitted with a ratchet-wheel and pawl to hold fast the rear pulley 17 during the return journey.
