Abstract
4857. British Thomson-Houston Co., and Park, W. March 3. Brakes.-A track brake for railways a n d tramways is suspended in such a manner that the weight of the vehicle body is transferred immediately, on the application of the brake through a rigid framing, from the axles to the brake shoes. The brake may either be applied by hand or electro - magnetically. The brake e, Figs. 1 and 3, having renewable shoes f is connected by links g with a pin h. A short link k connected by a chain with hand-operating means is pivoted on the pin h together with an adjustable link m, the other end of which is pivoted on a snug n formed on the back of vertical plates c. The plates c pass vertically upwards on each side of the side bar a, and at their lower ends are rigidly secured to a longitudinal angle-iron beam b supported beneath the axle-boxes, while their upper ends are connected to the beam b by the rods d, the whole forming a rigid frame. The drag of the brake shoe is taken on a tongue-shaped bracket r secured to the beam b, which engages jaws or a pocket s secured to the side of the magnet. The brakes at each side of the vehicle are rigidly connected by means of a bar o. When the brakes are mechanically applied, the upward thrust is transmitted through the links g, m to the beam b, which relieves the axles of the weight of the car body. When applied electrically, the weight of the vehicle is not transferred to the brake blocks.
