Abstract

4519. Edwards. A. H. Feb. 28. Aerial machines without aerostats; aeroplanes; launching; propelling; steering.-An aerial machine or a hydroplane is constructed (1) with forwardly and rearwardly converging planes, which may be arranged so that the front and rear planes at one side of the longitudinal centre line of the machine make an angle of (say) 150-160 degrees with those on the opposite side ; (2) or the planes, while converging forwardly, may have a single, rectangular, transverse, rear plane, the whole surface being horizontal. As shown in Fig. 1, the front planes A, A' converge and meet on the longitudinal centre line X as do the rear planes B, b', which have a larger area than the front planes. The planes on each side of the line X are in the same plane, and they are securely mounted on rigid arms D, E fixed to the carriage C and suitably stayed. A suitable motor H, which drives propellers I, is mounted on the carriage C, and rudders J, K are arranged to be operated by the aviator. Running wheels L carried by spring brackets are provided. In a modification, Fig. 5, the rear planes B <x> have their forward edges terminating on the transverse centre line X, thus leaving a triangular opening Y instead of the diamond - shaped opening Y, Fig. 1. Another arrangement of planes is shown in Fig. 6, where the front and rear planes A<xx>, B<x>x are arranged horizontally, and the machine has an upper and lower set. Two vertical independent rudders J<1> may be fitted, or there may be one deep flexible rudder constructed so as to allow the upper and lower ends to be operated separately. A further modification is described in which the rear planes are narrower than those shown in Fig. 1. In this case a number of planes are employed to form as many decks as desired. The planes may be arranged to be moved during flight, and all or any of the planes may be curved or arranged at any pitch with respect to the other planes.
