Abstract

4461. Michaud, G., and Delasson, E. June 10, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Incandescent lamps.-In making filaments to be heated by gas, petroleum spirit, acetylene, lusol, or the like, silica, alumina, lime, magnesia, or a mixture of these substances is mixed with rare oxides such as thoria and ceria, and with black soap to form a paste ; traces of chromium oxide may be added. The paste is squirted by means of a piston G, Fig. 1, through a die which may have a serrated edge. A hollow filament may be made by means of a die having a central rod which is attached to a perforated partition within the cylinder. The filament traverses a vertical tube C of refractory material such as carborundum or thoria or other rare earth, heated by electric arcs one on each side of it. At the constricted lower end of the tube, the filament is cut into lengths by a knife H operated by an electro-magnet. The filaments may be arranged conically to form a mantle or vertically in one plane, and supported either at their upper or lower ends. Alternatively they may project horizontally in one plane from a vertical stem. An inverted burner has a number of filaments projecting downwards radially. Tubular bodies, or bodies having thin radially-projecting ribs, may be made by similar processes.
