Vices.-In quick-adjustment parallel vices of the kind in which a half-nut is moved into or out of engagement with the vice screw by a bar attached to sleeves frictionally engaging with the plain parts of the screw, according as the screw is turned in one or the opposite direction, the sleeve bar has its motion limited on both sides by stops arranged so that in one direction a spring plunger forces the nut up against the screw, and in the other direction the spring plunger is depressed by the sleeve bar to permit the nut to fall away from the screw. The operating-screw 6 is arranged in bearings 5 and has at its forward end a coned part 11 fitted with a sleeve 12 connected to a rear collar 14 by a bar 13. A spring 15 always keeps the parts 11, 12 in good frictional contact. The half-nut 8 is guided to move vertically in a recess 9 between stops 10, and is formed with a spindle 18 passing through a plate 19 fixed to the bed 1. When the screw is turned in one direction, the sleeve bar 13 contacts with one stop 16, and the nut 8 is pressed into engagement with the screw 6 by a spring plunger 20, as shown in Fig. 2; while when the screw is turned in the opposite direction, the bar 13 depresses the spring plunger and the nut falls out of engagement. The spring plunger may be provided with an auxiliary spring which bears upon the top of the nut so as to ensure that the nut falls on being released. Instead of employing the conical friction clutch 12, a contacting faced clutch may be used, the two surfaces of which are in contact by a spring.
