Abstract

1567. Noe, A. T. Jan. 23. Fans.-In a portable, manually-propelled, vacuum cleaning- apparatus for domestic use, a platform mounted on rollers is provided at the end opposite the propelling-handle with a suction mouth, which is adapted to make flat contact with the carpet or floor surface to be cleaned. A suction fan and its driving-motor are mounted upon the platform, which also carries a dust-collector, and means are provided whereby auxiliary suction nozzles may be connected to the apparatus for the cleaning of walls, ceilings, and furniture. The platform 1 is mounted on rollers 2 located between the propelling - handle 5 and the suction mouth 11, preferably in the plane of the common axis of the exhaust fan 20 and its driving-motor 8. The suction mouth is provided with flanges 22, 22<a>, which extend below the platform and are adapted to make flat contact with the floor surface to be cleaned, the flange 22 being made adjustable horizontally so as to provide a space 23 through which air is drawn downwards on to the surface being cleaned. The suction chamber may be provided with a vertically adjustable brush 12, which is rotated through belt gearing from the fan shaft. The chamber communicates with a preliminary dust-collector furnished with an inclined screen 13<a> and with a removable drawer 15 for receiving the deposits rejected by the screen. The tapering cover of the dustcollector communicates with the fan inlet, the connecting-passage being provided with two separate valves 17, Fig. 1 or a three-way valve, to enable auxiliary suction nozzles to be used with the apparatus when attached by hose to a branch pipe 19. The fan, which forms the subject-matter of Specification No. 11,291, A.D. 1908, is of the two-stage type. The casing is made in vertical halves bolted together and provided with a central partition 35, Fig. 10. The rotors 30 are mounted on the shaft of the electromotor, and consist of hubs 33 and pairs of disks 27 between which are disposed curved, but substantially radial blades. The disks are secured together by rivets passing through lugs on the blades. The axial inlet to each fan chamber is at the outer side, and the fan chambers are enlarged at their peripheries 37. The tangential outlet pipe 25 from the first chamber leads to the inlet of the other by way of a radial pipe, the tangential outlet from the second chamber being adapted to carry a dust-collector or filter 50. Annular packing-rings are provided between the outer disks and the walls of the casing to prevent the air delivered from the rotors from passing back to the inlets. The primary rotor is preferably made of less width, and both pairs of disks may be dished so as to converge towards the periphery.
