Abstract

1529. Salles, G. Feb. 18, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Coupling; stowing; shackles.-Relates to means for enabling lifting-chains 41, Fig. 15, secured to submerged vessels to be connected to the lifting - chains 46 of a rescuing vessel and to means for stowing a cable in the buoy used for floating up the end of the cable in order that it may be picked up by the rescuing vessel and hauled up to tighten the attached lifting-chain 41 of the submerged vessel. The lifting-chain 41 of the submerged vessel is connected to the cable 40 by a connecting cone 44 on the end of the cable and a shackle 47, consisting of two parts connected by trunnions 48 and a pin 49. After the chain 41 has been tightened by the cable 40 being hauled up, connexion is made between the chains 41, 46 by passing on to the cable 40 a cylindrical grapnel 45, which is let down the cable 40 by the lifting-chain 46 until the cone 44 is engaged by the latches 55 of the grapnel. Fig. 19 shows a casing 38 for receiving the cables attached to the lifting-chains in which the coils are separated by concentric partitions 38.
