Abstract

1432. Vogel, G. J. H. Jan. 21. Automatic instruments.-In automatic musical instruments, two apertures are provided in the tracker-board for each note, and the ducts leading from either set can be partially throttled by means of valves which are adapted to be simultaneously operated throughout the whole instrument. Fig. 2 shows apertures 1, 2 provided in the tracker 3 corresponding to one note, and connected through pipes x, x<1> and a common pipe x<2> to the noteactuating pneumatic t. Valves y, y' are adapted to be partially closed by levers s, s<1>, which close corresponding valves throughout the instrument. The tune-sheet is provided with perforations which coincide with either or both of the apertures 1, 2, one set of perforations being for the melody and the other for the accompaniment. Thus by operating the valves y, y', it is possible to emphasise either the melody or the accompaniment throughout the whole range of the instrument. By making the aperture in the tune-sheet equal to the width of both the apertures in the tracker, the notes produced may be made one and a half times or twice as loud as the normal by suitably regulating the valves.
