Abstract

1097. Benjaminowitsch, W., and Lohmann, A. Jan. 16. Cigarette-making machines.-In the manufacture of coiled paper mouthpieces for cigarettes, two or more concentric mandrels are used so that the different convolutions of the mouthpiece are wound on mandrels of different diameter. The inner mandrel 1 has a bifurcated end, into which the point of the mouthpiece blank is introduced by a longitudinal displacement of the mandrel after the blank has entered a conical slot 5 in the larger part thereof. After one or two convolutions have been wound on this mandrel, the outer mandrel 4 commences to rotate and winds the paper blank on its outer periphery. More concentric mandrels may be employed. Immediately before the winding is completed, a slit sleeve 8 is slipped over the coiled mouthpiece, and serves to introduce it into the cigarette tube. A conveyer device 7 serves to guide the blank to the mandrels. The longitudinal displacement of the mandrel 1 is effected by a lever c and cam b, Fig. 12, on the driving-shaft 1. This driving-shaft is geared to a sleeve e, which, when displaced by means of a lever k and cam l, engages an arm m and drives the mandrel 1. The outer mandrel 4 is driven by this arm m when the sleeve n is displaced so as to place a finger r into engagement with the arm. The lever k carries a bar s having notches, which allow the arm m and projection t to pass when these parts are rotating. When the driving of the mandrel 1 is stopped, the arm m and the projection t engage with the bar s, and so position the respective mandrels correctly for feeding the paper blank. The projection t enters the groove u on the arm u<1> when the sleeve n is displaced. In a modification, the blank is fed through a slot, formed approximately tangentially to the inner periphery of the mandrel and bent against the inner periphery, the inner mandrel 13 serving only as a guide which may be displaced to hold the part of the coil that is wound inside the mandrel 11. The paper may be fed by means of a slotted guide 10 and roller 10<a>.
