Abstract
28,184. Jones, J., and Rigg, J. Dec. 21. Pistons; valves.-Relates to packing of the kind described in Specification No. 29,234, A.D. 1906. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the outer ring is dispensed with. The segments a form tenon joints with one another, and are formed with recesses receiving brackets d, having telescoping tubes on which are mounted springs g. The joint is covered by a sliding plate m fitting in grooves n. When the ring a is surrounded by an outer ring, the plate m is dispensed with. Two rings a may be used side by side, being arranged to break joint and pressed apart by springs. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, a joint is covered by a plate p, secured to one segment by a stud q and having a recess to receive the bracket d. According to the Provisional Specification, the ends of adjoining segments a may be held together by a bolt to facilitate insertion and extraction of the packing. The packing may also be held together by a steel band lying in a groove in the periphery of the packing, its ends being secured together by a screw and nut.
