Abstract

27,985. Brown, J. A. Dec. 19. Sewing-machine feed.-A reverse-feed mechanism is described which may be fitted to any underneathfeed type of machine, and may be brought into operation while the machine is running. A segment I is mounted upon a spindle K in a bearing fixed to the arm B, and is connected to the pendent arm E' of the strap E of an eccentric D mounted on the top shaft C. An arm O is mounted on the feed-traverse shaft F, and on the arm is fixed a bolt P having a cone-shaped head Q, Fig. 3, which carries a lever R to the end of which a die S is attached. The die slides on a projection J of the segment. A second conical headed bolt U mounted on a lug T, carries a bell-crank lever V provided with an enlarged end, in the circular recess of which is fitted a slotted block which receives the lever R. The shorter arm of the bell-crank lever is connected to a treadle. For regulating the length of the stitch, a shaft 1 carried in the arm, is provided with a circular block 3 having a cam-shaped recess 4, and the enlarged end of the lever V bears against one of the sides of the recess. A stitchregulator lever 6 is mounted on the end of a shaft 1, and is provided with a spring catch 7 adapted to engage with the notches of a stitchgauge plate 9. The turning of the arm 6 causes the lever V, and consequently the die S, to be moved nearer to, or further away from the pivot of the segment I, thereby altering the amount of the feed which may be reversed from the treadle by depressing the bell-crank lever V and causing the die S to move over to the other side of the spindle K, the lever V being at the same time moved to the other side of the cam-recess 4. The segment and lever may also be connected either with the feed-traverse or the feed-rising shaft.
