Abstract
27,504. Potts, F. Dec. 13. Heating - furnaces for metals. - A gas - heated furnace for files, drills, &c. is divided by an horizontal partition into two compartments B, C provided with doors B<2>, C<2> respectively, sliding in vertical guides, the doors being connected together and operated by means of a treadle F. Adjustable supplies of air under pressure and gas, from pipes I, J respectively, are delivered at opposite sides of the furnace into flues G, H, arranged beneath the chamber C and shown in horizontal section in Fig. 3. The products of combustion, after passing through openings H<2>, G<2> into the chamber C, escape through an opening at the back into the chamber B, and thence to the stack which rises from the front. The valves on the pipes I, J are provided with indicators M, N, and, instead of using gas, a blast of air previously passed through incandescent coke may be delivered to the flues G, H.
