Abstract

27,221. Fadda, A. S., Lorenzo, J. di, and Aeroplano Co. Dec. 9. Aerial machines with aerostats; aeroplanes; aerostats; shock of landing, deadening; propelling; steering.-An aerial machine is raised by two buoyant bodies 20, 25, from which air is partly exhausted, by screw propellers, and by compressed air which flows through downwardly-placed pipes or nozzles 16 : vibrating planes may also assist in raising the machine, and screw propellers drive the machine forwards. The motor 6 drives compressing-pumps 11, which force air along pipes 13 into pear-shaped bodies 12 the air escaping through the outlets 16. A spring plate 17, Fig. 5, is placed inside the body 12 to prevent the jet of air from injuring the top of the shell. The hollow bodies 20, 25 are constructed of a light frame of wiremesh, covered with silk and protected outside by strips 22 of aluminium, while an interior bracing of bamboo rods prevents the bodies from collapsing when the air is exhausted by pumps 28 or by ejectors. The forward aerostat 20 is rigidly secured to the framing 1 of the machine, and the rear aerostat is hinged at 26 and forms a rudder operated by steering-gear 27. The machine is propelled by propellers 34, 35, secured on a longitudinal shaft 36 and driven by sprocket chains 38. Lifting-screws 40, 41 are driven through bevel-wheels 44 from the shaft 36. The wings 45 are hinged to brackets 47, Fig. 3, and are connected by links 49 to a crank 50. The wings are hinged along the central line 46 so that they collapse on the upstroke. A frame 54 carrying wheels 55 is connected to the frame 1 by hollow elastic bodies 57, each containing a spring 58, which prevent shocks when alighting.
