Abstract

27,023. Hoennicke, E. Dec. 17, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Albumens.-Extracts from thyroid glands or other organs made by maceration in salt solution and containing the active secretions are freed from dissolved cell albumen. The cell albumen may be coagulated and thus removed from the solution by heating gradually to about 80 to 85 degrees C. and then slowly cooling, or by heating to blood heat for a considerable period. In the latter case, or in the cold, coagulation is accelerated or produced by shaking, ur by the addition of more cellular or other easily coagulated albumen, or of blood, ferments, inorganic colloids, or of materials such as carbon which produce a surface action. In the cold, the cell albumen may be coagulated and removed by treatment with carbonic-acid gas, or by passing an electric current through the liquid. A similar effect may be obtained by filtering the solution through a layer of coagulated cellular albumen. A modified process consists in coagulating the albumen in the exterior layers of the gland by drying, or by dipping in alcohol or boiling water, and then placing the gland in salt solution so that the active secretion may diffuse through this outer layer, cellular albumen being retained.
