Abstract

26,280. Atkinson, J. Nov. 28. Prcpelling by reciprocating plates.-Ships are propelled by means of blades hinged to the fore and aft ends of shafts g, h, Fig. 3, which pass longitudinally through the ship and are reciprocated longitudinally by cranks and connecting-rods from an engine. Fig. 2 shows the aft r The blades a work on vertical hinges b and bear in their open position against vertical stops e on the shaft d when this shaft is moving in the direction of the arrow B. On reversal of the shaft, the blades close into the position shown by the dotted lines with the studs f thereon in contact. Fig. 5 shows the fore propeller, the arrangement being such that the blades of both propellers are open when the shaft is moving in the direction opposite to that in which the ship is moving. As shown in Fig. 3, a shaft i is provided with a propeller 2 at the aft end, to propel the ship astern when necessary.
