Counting-apparatus.-In an apparatus for delivering predetermined numbers of pills &c. into boxes and applying lids thereto, the pills fall from a hopper upon a stationary segmental rail or deflecting-edge fixed in the space between two co-axial drums having equal diameters, and are thus directed into the interior of the drums. Groups of holes at fixed distances apart in the drums receive a definite number of pills, which are prevented from falling through until they are carried clear of a semi-cylindrical cover-plate surrounding the lower halves of the drums ; they then fall out of the holes down an external shoot, and so into boxes carried by a table turned to rotate in dependence upon the deliveries of pills. Lids for the boxes fall down a stationary inclined shoot, and the rotation of the table causes a spring plate to press them upon the boxes. Pills from the hopper 5, Fig. 1, fall down a spout 14 and upon the rail or deflecting-edge 15, Figs. 2 and 4, and thus pass into the interior of the drums 13 provided with groups of holes 17 and with an external semi-cylindrical cover-plate 18. The drums, which are fixed on a shaft 11 and driven through gearing 12 by a pulley 8 provided with a clutch 9, deliver the pills over the edge of the cover - plate 18 down the shoot 19, and so into boxes 34 placed in recesses 24 in a circular table 20. This table is rotated through worm gearing by the main shaft 7. Lids 35 for the boxes passing edgeways down the inclined shoot 26 are first turned into the correct position, and are then momentarily arrested over the filled boxes by the inwardly - turned spring arms 27, Fig. 2. The continued rotation of the table 20 causes the spring plate 30 placed over the end of the shoot 26 to press the lids upon the boxes, which are then removed from the table by tangential arms 33 and deflected into the delivery channel 32.
