Abstract

25,267. Doxat, A. C. Nov. 14. Basting appliances, -Apparatus for basting meat &c. suspended from a jack b in a roaster a comprises an endless chain &c. n, to which are hinged one or more gravy buckets o provided with a curved spout by which the gravy carried up from the wellf is discharged on to a grooved board c when the bucket is passing over the upper sprocket-wheel j. The buckets are hinged at one side to the chain, and have a projection on the opposite side of the mouth to keep the mouth in a vertical plane as it enters the gravy, and so prevent the buckets from being air-locked. The wheel j is driven by clock-work in the case h, provided with a high-speed fly escapement made of metal foil so that it can be bent to offer a varying resistance to rotation and thus vary the speed of the clock - work. The well f is semicylindrical in shape, its mouth projecting above the level of the inclined pan e and having perforations round the upper edge to allow the gravy to flow in from the pan, which may be removable. Two or more chains with buckets driven from one motor may be used for basting two or more joints carried by separate jacks or by a single horizontal shaft or spit. According to the Provisional Specification, one or more buckets may be carried by one or more balanced arms mounted on a rotating shaft, and when chains or belts are used a reversing- mechanism may cause the buckets to travel alternately in opposite directions, the buckets being filled and emptied by coming against stops which tilt them.
