Abstract

22,982. Ratcliff, W. Oct. 18. Making parts of looms.-Loom shuttles are made from two stamped sheet-metal blanks 20, Fig. 2, the base of each preferably having a longitudinal groove. Portions are cut away at 21, Fig. 5, and the cut edges are folded over. The flanges 22 on one part are then made channelwise to receive narrower flanges on the other part and the joint is pressed inwards, as shown in Fig. 10, to leave a smooth exterior. A hole is pierced at each end to receive the steel point 28, Fig. 15, which is brazed to the shuttle body. A cage or support for the spindle is made from the blank 29, Fig. 12, and inserted in the body at 30, which is sunken to receive the overhanging flanges of the cage, and the parts are brazed together. The porcelain eye 39 is secured in a tube 37 brazed or soldered to the opening 36, and yarn, hemp, or other substance may be passed through similar tubes 40 to serve as tension brushes for the yarn.
