Abstract

22,678. Painter, R. M. Oct. 15. Instruction apparatus for semaphore signalling is provided with a dial D having the letters of the alphabet marked along seven radial lines, to indicate the positions to which two actuating- levers G must be brought for signalling any particular letter. The levers G are connected by chain gearing, which may ininclude a tensioning- spring, to semaphore arms E, so that when a lever G is moved to a particular radius the arm E connected to it moves correspondingly. T h e letters A to G appear each on a single radius, and are signalled by the use of one only of the semaphore arms, the other arm being brought down into a vertical position in which it is concealed by the hollow mast B. The letters H to Z appear each on two of the radial lines and require both arms for signalling. Thus, in the position shown, the letter 8 is being signalled. An arm F indicates the right-hand side of the operator. The apparatus may be made in a portable miniature form. According to the Provisional Specification, the dial D may be lettered on both sides to facilitate the sending of messages in opposite directions.
