Abstract

20,831. Birkmyre, M. A. Sept. 19. Crops, cut, stacking.-Relates to apparatus for collecting or raking hay, clover, &c. for use as a distinct machine or in combination with hay-loaders and cock-makers, and comprising one or more endless belts or chains moving transversely in front of the supporting-wheel and driver's seat and carrying pivoted teeth, which are held vertical while raking, but are allowed to turn about their pivots to free themselves from the crop as they rise from the ground. Fig. 1 shows a windrower with the horse shafts &c. removed, and Figs. 3 and 4 show one of the tines and its chain attachment. The endless chain n passes round an adjustable sprocket-wheel o and a sprocket-wheel m, which is connected to the axle by bevel gearing. The main wheels fare connected to the axle by ratchets and small supporting-wheels v are provided. The sprocketwheel o is carried by an adjustable arm q supported by a hinged extension t of the framing a, which may be turned up for transport or storage. The tension of the chain n is regulated by means of an adjustable sprocket-wheel 11. Each tine z is provided with a pivot-pin y passing freely through the walls of brackets x fixed to the chain n. The tine projects through an open slot 1, and the pin y is bent to form an arm 4. As each tine passes round the sprocket-wheel o, a cam 5 engages the arm 4 and raises the tine and moves it into a recessed part 2 of the slot 1. Angle-bars 8 prevent lateral movement out of the recess 2 while the tine is raking, and the sides of the recess 2 prevent movement about the pivot. Guides 9 are provided to insure that the tine shall be in its proper position in the slot 1 when the arm 4 engages the cam 5. As the tine passes round the wheel m it is pushed out of the recess 2 by a cam 10. By the addition of the hinged extension t<1>, sprocket-wheels o<1>, m<1>, cams 10<1>, 10<2>, and bevel-gearing and clutches, the machine may be arranged to take two chains to rake the hay from the sides towards the centre. Motors may be employed to drive the machines.
