Boat raising and lowering gear.-A crane, fire-escape, or similar apparatus applicable for launching life - boats comprises a small jib crane pivotally mounted in a stanchion, which may be fixed to a vertical pillar by adjustable brackets or other means so that the apparatus can be swung inside the opening. Means are provided for automatically braking the winch from the rope or cable according to the weight of the load. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the stanchion a carries in sockets b a post or frame c in which is mounted the spindle e of the winding-drum p. Pivoted to the frame c is a jib f having at its outer end a pulley over which the cable p<1> passes and which is connected by a shackle i and flexible connexion l to the lever m pivoted to the frame c. The lever m is connected by a link n to a band brake o passing round the drum p. With this arrangement, the brake o is applied from the cable p<1> according to the weight of the descending load. Means may be provided for putting the brake out of action. The cable may be wound up by a hand-lever on the spindle e, or, according to the Provisional Specification, by the drum p being formed with a spring. In another form, two ropes wound in opposite directions are employed, the ropes being wound on drums on the shaft e with the brake pulley between them. In this form, when the apparatus is out of use, one rope is coiled upon its drum and the other rope is coiled upon a drum mounted upon the jib. The apparatus may ba arranged with more than two ropes and drums. Slings or cradles and guidelines may be employed. A form of crane is shown mounted on a vertical pillar.
