Abstract

20,497. Keep, G. A., and Woolley, E. S. Sept. 14. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. Paraffin and other heavy hydrocarbon oils are passed through a water or steam heated chamber before being admitted to the usual carburettor. In the example illustrated, a double-walled chamber is heated by the cooling-water from the cylinder jackets. The chamber comprises an outer casing A having inlet and outlet tubes B, C connected to the jackets of the cylinders. An inner chamber D of copper is provided with baffle-plates o and is traversed by rows of different-sized copper tubes E, F. The tubes are preferably square in section and are arranged to produce a further baffling effect on the oil passing through the inner chamber from the entrance G to the exit H. The water from the outer chamber passes through the tubes and heats the oil, which is afterwards passed into the usual carburettor, as shown in Fig. 3. To enable a vehicle motor co be started, petrol is supplied by a pipe K until the cooling-water becomes sufficiently heated to allow heavy fuel to be used. A two-way valve M is operated by the driver to cut off the petrol or paraffin supply when desired. A preliminary heating-device may be employed to heat the chamber A at starting.
