Cranes.-A machine for use in charging open-hearth and similar furnaces comprises a charging-arm mounted on a rotatable platform carried by a trolly which can be moved towards and away from the furnace, and which is supported in turn on a traversing trolly moving on rails at or about the level of the bed of the furnace. In the arrangement shown the machine is supported on a trolly formed of girders 1, 2, 3, 4 having wheels 15, 16 running on rails 5, 6 and driven from an electric motor 8 through spur gearing 10, 12. The second trolly 17, carrying the rotatable platform 20 and the charging arm 21, is mounted on rails formed by the lower flange of the girders 3, 4, and is driven from a motor 22, Fig. 3, through spur and bevel gearing 25, 27, 32. The arm 21, which, in the arrangement shown, is adapted for manipulating charging-boxes, is pivoted in standards 38 mounted on the rotatable platform 20, and can be raised and lowered by the rod 40 connected to the crank 41. The latter is mounted on a shaft which is driven from a motor (nbt shown) through a train of gearing 43 ... 48. The platform 20 is rotated to bring the arm 21 into engagement with the charging-box by a pinion engaging the fixed rack 54. The arm is rotated to empty the contents of the box by worm gearing 49.
