Abstract

19,136. Jenkins, W. W. Aug. 26. Locking nuts.-A spring plate 3, Fig. 3, used to span and lock nuts, paiticularly in rail joints has a slot 4 and side flanges 5 at one end, and a hole 9 and flanges 6, turned oppositely to the flanges 5, at the other. One nut 2 of the rail joint is screwed uo tight and the second is loosely screwed up against a gauge-plate 7, which is subsequently forced out by the slotted end of the plate 3, the flanges 5 engaging the nut 2 as shown in Fig. 5. The plate 3 is then turned as a wrench to tighten up the nut till the other end of the plate can be sprung over the first nut as shown in Fig. 2, the flanges 6 locking it. The bolt end 1 enters the hole 9, and in addition a flange 10 maybe provided to prevent longitudinal movement of the plate 3. Specifications Nos. 4682, A.D. 1884, and No. 13,564, A.D. 1887, are referred to.
