Abstract

18,592. Sheffield, G. H., and Twinberrow, J. D. Aug. 16. Axle - trucks or undercarriages; brakes.-Bogies for railway vehicles are constructed with long, deep side frames a, shown in dotted lines in Fig.3. The frames are stiffened by flanges b pressed from the plate or riveted in place, and are connected by four crossbearers c, d. A longer wheel - base than normal is thus rendered possible. The upper flanges of the cross-bearers are connected in pairs with horizontal plates or bracing, and the lower flanges of the deep cross-bearers c by diagonal bracing. In the case of motor bogies, vertical diaphragms or gussets are also secured to the cross-bearers in pairs ; but where space is not required between the bearers and the headstock for machining these are connected by means of A-shaped bracing, thus providing for central brake rigging. The brake rigging consists of vertical levers n, Fig. 3, pivoted to cross-beams o which also carry push-rods p acting upon the inner brake blocks q. Pull-rods t connect the lower ends of the levers n with similar levers v pivoted to cross-beams w carrying the outer brake blocks x. The upper ends of the levers v are connected by pull-rods y to links z, to which are also connected the upper ends of one pair of levers n and, by means of pull-rods 2 and a yoke, the main pull-rod. The inner brackets 6, Fig. 5, for the usual bearing-springs 5 support also an inverted spring 7, from which the bolster spring beam 10 is suspended by sling links 9. The lateral movement of the frame with respect to the bolster beam is provided for by inclining the links 9 outwards ; or the links may be rigid, in which case the bolster springs 11 are seated on sliding plates, or on balls or rollers 13, Fig. 9, or rocking segments 14, Fig. 7. In the latter case the tread of each segment 14 is formed to a radius struck from the pivot so as to ensure the return of the frame to its normal position. In a special form of bracket for the springs 5, the inverted cup 16, Fig. 11, is provided with flanges 17, 18 to extend to the inner side of the frame plate and is ribbed for the attachment of a cross-member of the frame. It may also serve to support the brake block hangers.
