Abstract

16,933. Arnot, J. M. July 24. Pulping-engines.-The bronze, steel, stone, or other bars or knives h, Fig. 4, are mounted in slots q in the beater roll p, and are driven against the fixed blades b, Fig. 5, of the cylindrical casing a by centrifugal force. Three forms of engines are described : one for strong papers and long stuffs, of which Figs. 4 and 5 show details ; a second for short fibres and " free stuff," in which the bars h and projections on the bed-plate are thinner, and square, instead of being bevelled ; and a third consisting of a combination of the Brat and second, as shown in Fig. 10, one half of the roll being provided with beater blades as at h, Fig. 4, and the other half with the thinner bars mounted diagonally. The thinner bars h, Fig. 12, are fixed to segments g dovetailed to blocksf fitting loosely between the radial spokes e on the shaft d. The bed-plate may be made of hard lead, with bars of bronze or other material, and cast whole or in segments. Two end plates i are made movable for changing the worn-out bars, and the ends of the beater are closed by plates j and stuffing-boxes k. The shaft may be provided with a bronze sleeve to take up wear at the stuffing-boxes. Pulp is drawn from the mixing-vat by a screw conveyer or other device, and enters the machine at t and leaves at u, a stop-cock in the latter aperture regulating the rate of flow. The machine may be mounted horizontally or vertically and driven by variable motor direct, or through variable gear. By running the roll at a low speed, the stuff may be simply opened out, and by increasing the speed the stuff may be softened to any extent.
