Abstract

Sounds, locating direction of.-In apparatus for finding the direction of a sound signal at sea in which a microphone transmitter is placed at each side of the vessel and the intensities of the two sounds are compared, an ammeter is provided to compare the states of the two transmitting circuits. The ammeter is in series with a telephone and is placed alternately in series with two circuits containing a common battery and one of the microphone transmitters. In Fig. 2 one pole of the battery A is shown connected by wires B, C to the transmitters, which are also connected by wires B', C' to a switch D. This switch puts the receivers in circuit with the ammeter F and telephone G by means of the springs E, E<1>. As the current flows in different directions for the different positions of the switch D, the ammeter, the zero of which is at the centre of the scale, indicates which receiver is in circuit as well as the current in the circuit. In modifications, the position of the switch handle may show which receiver is in circuit, or this may be indicated by a lamp. The telephone may be replaced by a magneto-electric relay device to operate various signals. Specification No. 11,021, A.D. 1906, [Abridgment Class Electric telegraphs &c.], is referred to.
