Conveyers for proving dough in baking operations, comprise a series of boxes connected to endless chains which are driven by suitable mechanism, means also being provided to retain the dough in boxes when they are in an inverted position. Figs. 1 and 2 show a conveyer for this purpose, comprising a series of boxes f attached to roller chains running on rails b. The boxes receive the dough from the dividing - machine through the hopper i, and deliver it over a fixed guide to a conveyer belt o. Each box has a bottom and a suitable number of transverse compartments bounded by one common side wall g, the top and remaining side being left open. While the boxes are travelling horizontally, the open sides are closed by the walls of the adjacent boxes. A belt j, or a series of wooden slats supported by rollers or roller chains on rails l, runs on pulleys i<1> and retains the dough in the boxes on the return journey. A canvas web n runs between-the belt and the boxes, and may be diverted at one end to pass over a pulley n<1> and thus retain the dough in the boxes while they are rounding the chain-wheel d. A fixed shield may however be used for this purpose. The pulleys d, n<1>, i<1> are mounted in adjustable bearings m to allow the tension in the chains and belts to be regulated. The chains are rotated by pawl-andratchet mechanism r which also transmits motion by toothed gearing to the belts, and may be utilized to impart a rocking motion to the hopper i. The hopper may be provided with guides to direct the divided masses of dough into the compartments of the boxes. The machine may be arranged with two series of boxes side by side or superposed, and the boxes and belts may be arranged in inclined positions.
