Abstract

15,253. Weeber, R. July 2. Compound fabrics.-A leather substitute is produced by treating vegetable, animal, and other fibres in the form of ` fleeces' or locks' with a solution of balata, gutta-percha, or caoutchouc, and subsequently treating with reagents which precipitate the binding - materials. The precipitant may, however, be added first and then the solution of rubber &c. The product obtained is pressed and dried. To increase the strength and uniformity, the product may be mercerized, preferably by a caustic-soda solution, in addition to which it may be vulcanized. If a coloured final product is desired, dyes may be added to the solutions. The finished product may also be treated on one or both sides with rubber, celluloid, nitro-cellulose, viscose, albumen, &c. Suitable so!vents are benzine, carbon bisulphide, carbon tetrachloride, and benzol, and suitable precipitants are acetone, alcohol, and methyl alcohol.
