Abstract
14,634. Buxton, F. E. June 25. Adjusting for wear; oil catching and retaining.- A bearing for shafts, provided with means for taking up wear, comprises a casing A in which is mounted a worm A', gearing with teeth B' on a sleeve B, one end of which is threaded and engages internal threads on the casing A. The sleeve B is formed with bevelled shoulders B<2> between which are placed four brasses C separated by packings E'. The shoulders and brasses are slightly wedge-shaped and inclined as shown in Fig. 2, with the result that when the sleeve B is rotated by the worm it moves endways and compresses the brasses on the shaft, at the same time presenting a fresh wearing-surface below the shaft. Oil is supplied to the packings E<1> and is retained by split-spring rings C' secured by pins to one of the brasses. The ends of the bearing are closed by screwed caps D which are grooved at D' to receive oil-retaining split rings D<3> held against the shaft by springs D<4>. In a modification, the sleeve B is provided with wedge-shaped grooves to receive ribs on the brasses, and each brass is provided with a flange overlapping the packing E<1> and the adjoining brass. In another modification, the bearing is constructed with three instead of four brasses.
