Abstract

14,338. Lake, A. E. Dec. 4. Lifting-jacks are con structed with a lever motion for raising, and a screw motion for lowering Fig. 1 shows a jack in which the load is supported by a crutch E at the top of the rack - bar A. A lever H and spring pawl J are used to raise the load the screwed nut B in the meantime being dis. engaged from the rack-bar by being rotated about its pivot F by the ascending bar. For lowering, the pawl J is disengaged from the rack by means of the chain L, and the screwed nut is then rotated by means of levers inserted in slots B<1>. The bar A may have two racks, one for engagement with the screwed nut and the other for engagement with the lever and pawl. Fig. 2 shows a modified nut which slides out of engagement with the rack-bar on the spindle C' and has the screw-thread formed on its bevelled under surface. Fig. 4 shows a jack in which a racked lifting-bar is engaged by a pinion mounted on the shaft L<1> behind the wheel M. This wheel is rotated, for raising the load, by means of the lever H and spring pawl J, the worm B meanwhile being forced out of engagement against the action of the spring N. The pawl is disengaged and the screw rotated to lower the load, as before. The worm-wheel M may be connected to the shaft L' by a one-way clutch and the worm B may always remain in engagement with it. Fig. 5 shows another form of jack having a circular lifting-bar with a screw-thread of quick pitch arranged so that the nut B will fall by its own weight, when the bar is lifted, and engage the bevelled friction surface C<3>. A sleeve J surrounds the screw and grips the bar A for raising purposes when turned into an inclined position by means of the lever H. When the sleeve J rests on the projection C<2> in the casing, the bar A is released and may be lowered by rotating the screwed nut B. The nut may be made in two parts arranged to move apart when the lifting- bar is raised, as described in Specification No. 6591, A.D. 1905.
