Abstract

13,912. Hall, R. F. June 17. Motor road vehicles.-The differential gear of a motor-car is provided with means for adjusting the bevel-wheels with all the wheels in full view, so as to take up wear and cause them to mesh properly, one-half of the gear box being capable of removal without disturbing the other half. The gear box a is made in two parts bolted together as shown. The principal bevel-wheels are carried by parts which can slide under the influence of the adjusting-devices. The shank c<1> of the wheel c is so keyed at c<2> to a part of a universal joint of the driving-shaft that it is capable of sliding. This shank is surrounded by a screwed cap or bush f which screws into the casing, and encloses roller and thrust bearings as shown. Similar adjusting- devices such as i are arranged in connexion with the bearing-bushes k on the opposite side of the box which carries the large bevel-wheel e. To secure the lower half of the gear box when the upper half is removed for adjusting the gears, U-shaped straps o are provided which straddle over the upper sides of the adjusting-sleeves, while the legs o<2> depend through holes in the bottom part of the gear-box and are secured by nuts o<3>. These straps lock the adjusting-caps, and the locking may be made positive by providing a series of notches as shown at o<4> and arranging inside the crown of the strap a stud o<5> which may engage the notches o<4>. The parts of the top section of the gear-box which come over the screwed caps may be cast with internal grooves to fit over the arched parts of the straps, and the rotation of the caps or bushes may be facilitated by providing them with tommy-holes. Fig. 2 shows a disk brake mounted on the back axle, which forms the subject-matter of Specification No. 13,910, A.D. 1907.
