Abstract

13,719. Phillips, W. A., and Hutchins, F. June 13. Smoothing, waxing, and drying cord and twine.- Relates to apparatus for polishing or finishing cotton-covered wire coated with wax, varnish, &c., also applicable for finishing and lustring cords, twines, threads, &c., either in a dry state or after passing through a waxing, insulating, glazing, or like bath, or through graphite, bronze powder, or soap. The covered wire A, Fig. 1, from the drum B is waxed or varnished by passing around a roller C partly immersed, and is polished by means of a revolving tool or spindle K, preferably of hardened steel provided with a spiral groove, along which the wire passes, making line contact. The wire may then pass through a drying-tube L and another polishing-device K prior to being wound on a drum. The tool or spindle K is mounted in a driven tool-holder G, Fig. 4, and the covered wire A passes along the spiral groove, which deviates it from the straight line to produce a rubbing action, and through the hollow shank of the tool, the depth, length, and pitch of the groove determining the amount of rubbing. Superfluous wax, varnish, &c. is thrown off against a surrounding tube M and runs back into the receptacle D, the throwing- off effect being increased when a viscous varnish is used by the provision of a flange at the lower end of the tool. The lower end of the drying-tube L terminates in a box L<2> with an iulet pipe for supplying hot air etc.; gas may, however, be employed, in which case an internal concentric tube at the lower end of the tube L protects the wire from the direct action of the fumes. The tube L and the inner tube are slit vertically to facilitate the introduction of the wire.
